Original article written & designed by Advent Media Group, Cincinnati, Ohio

The following article will appear in GOOD HOUSEKEEPING,
REDBOOK & WOMAN'S DAY magazines in October, 2010.

"You want the path to motherhood paved with anticipation, excitement, and joy. But road blocks to conceiving can be overwhelming, confusing, and challenging for loving relationships."

Our important goals are to relieve the stress that accompanies the inability to conceive and provide the compassionate, individualized care that will give us the answers and outcomes we seek," says Lawrence B. Werlin, MD, Founder and Medical Director of Coastal Fertility Medical Center.

Dr. Werlin and his dedicated staff walk hand-in- hand with each couple as they explore the possibilities of parenthood.

Carrie and Michael, former patients and proud parents, add "Infertility is such a sensitive issue. Not only will Dr. Werlin feel your pain and hand you a tissue when you hit rock bottom, he will have you smiling again in no time. We were a team and we did not give up until my dream came true!"

The Challenges

For women, many factors can affect fertility, including endometriosis, premature menopause, ovarian dysfunction, and hormonal disorders. The male partner can contribute significant factors that prevent conception, and many cases are a combination of circumstances, some unexplainable.

Dr. Werlin begins with a thorough assessment of all possible contributing circumstances before mapping a course of treatment and recommending options to a patient, starting with the most conservative measures.

The Best in Technology

When general infertility treatments and repeated assisted reproductive technologies, such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), fail or when patients suffer recurring pregnancy loss, Dr. Werlin implements Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), an advanced process to determine whether a woman's embryos have chromosomal irregularities.

"PGD is one of the most incredible new developments in the field of reproductive medicine," says Dr. Werlin, a pioneer in this breakthrough. "We are thrilled to educate our patients about the procedure and offer it as a treatment."

During PGD, a single blastomere from a three-day post-fertilized embryo is removed and DNA tested. A reproductive endocrinologist analyzes the genetic make-up of the embryo, allowing the ability to identify fatal diseases like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, and hemophilia. Because the procedure allows for selection of the more viable embryos, the chances of a successful pregnancy increase.

Dr. Werlin concludes, "I work in the most exciting and rewarding field of medicine."

Dr. Werlin is a nationally renowned expert and researcher in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He calls the music of the Rolling Stones his "soundtrack for life," and patients applaud the undeniable passion he has for his work.
