PGD's Role in Screening for Genetic Diseases

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis was developed to help couples screen their embryos for genetic diseases like Cystic Fibrosis, Huntington’s Disease and, in the case of one patient, Hemophilia. In addition to genetic counseling, PGD offers an option to parents concerned with reducing the likelihood of passing along a hereditary disease.

This article was intended to offer an alternative look to diagnosis the disease before it becomes a factor. Below is an excerpt from an article I wrote on this couple’s touching story.

PGD Eliminates Threat of Hemophilia in Newborn Babies
-PGD Treatment removes hemophilia from family bloodline-

Carriers of hemophilia, a serious blood-coagulation disorder affecting more than 20,000 Americans; can draw hope of eliminating the condition’s prevalence in subsequent generations from an advanced reproductive medical technique known as Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD).

Under the medical supervision of a specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, couples are enabled to screen their embryos for the disease – which has an incidence rate of 400 babies per annum – and thereby remove the risk of giving birth to a child with hemophilia. For Michelle Rappaport, a hemophilia carrier who grew up watching her father suffer from the effects of the disease, PGD offered a way to remove its life-threatening affects from her family tree as well as future generations.

Sharing Research at PCRS on Embryo Viability

In three weeks, I have another speaking engagement coming up. I will be presenting some of my research at the Pacific Coast Reproductive Society’s annual conference in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The conference is a meeting of some of the world’s leaders in the field of reproductive medicine, and I am privileged share the findings of my latest study with this group.

I will be discussing some of the discoveries from my research on the relationship between Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and embryo viability.

PGD is a therapeutic and genetic testing tool that allows for the analysis and transfer of healthy embryos back to the uterus. In the study, 75 patients undergoing PGD treatment were retrospectively reviewed to determine if embryos obtained from second day intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), single pronucleus and no pronuclei exhibited characteristics of normality and viability for transfer. Each of the patients had undergone in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and ICSI with PGD treatment due to advanced maternal age, recurrent pregnancy loss, two or more failed cycles of IVF or severe male factor. Each of these is an indicator of increased risk for aneuploidy, an abnormal condition associated with extra or missing chromosomes, and aneuploidy can lead to miscarriages. The Benefit:
PGD enables the identification of abnormal embryos in patients with high-risk for aneuploidy. The benefit to our patients is that we are singling out and transferring embryos with greater viability and enhancing the potential for successful outcomes (pregnancy).

By studying the results of PGD for aneuploidy, we create opportunities to discover what works and what doesn’t work for producing healthy live birth outcomes for couples facing fertility challenges. This is our ultimate goal.
